Hello from Munich, Germany!
Just wanted to give a quick update of the great, crazy time we are having.
The plane ride from USA to Rome, Italy went quite well. It was very long! Drake was fussy at times, but did as well as any 7 month old would do on a 9 hour flight. He was actually pretty awesome and the flight attendants were quite impressed with him.
Rome was great, but much different from what I expected. In my mind, I saw Rome as a small, beautiful village with lots of fettucine alfredo and Italian music playing everywhere I went. haha! Quite naive, I know. It's a huge bustling city and it's pretty crazy! There were several time I was sure we were going to get in a car accident in some of the cabs we rode in, but somehow we survived. My favorite places were the Trevi Fountain, St. Peter's basilica, and the Colloseum. At night, we ate at a cute little restaurant where we DID have Italian music playing and ate delicious pasta. Then we walked around Piazza Navana where there are beautiful lit-up fountains- just breath-taking!
We rode an overnight train to Munich last night and it was pretty scary. Rob really wanted to do this instead of taking a plane up to Germany because he said it would be fun. So when we got there we found out that we were sharing a cabin with 3 other people and we were in this tiny tiny cabin. I about died thinking about having to sleep in there, with Drake, 3 strangers, and then having to be able to feed him on top of that. Needless to say, I got a little emotional (I was pretty tired). That is not the end though. We were under the impression, that the train was going to serve a nice dinner and instead found out they had a small meal car with a broken stove and cold egg sandwiche d out their stove wasn't working so we couldn't order anything. All they had to eat were these cold sandwiches. Egg salad and then some other sandwich that was made with this nasty authentic German Bread. Rob did fine of course and enjoyed his dinner. I am still alive from eating the egg salad sandwich, but Katelyn had a small breakdown because she couldn't find anything she liked. Poor Rob was on this train with 2 very emotional women. Needless to say everyone survived. We ended up sharing the Cabin with a very nice guy from Denmark named David. He spoke some english so we had a goot time talking with him. And the other two people didn't get on the train until later in the ride so we didn't even see them. Drake did awesome on the train and only woke up 1 time to eat. I was so woried about him though that I hardly even slept, every time he would make a tiny noise I would wake up cause I didn't want him to wake the other people up. Interesting experience to say the least.
So we finally arrived in Munich and we all felt a sigh of relief. Finally we are in a country where one of us speaks the language and plus we will have our own car. We had breakfast at a backery at the Munich Train Station and it was delicious. We went and got our car, did some grocery shopping and checked into the Marriot where we were staying where we all immediately showered because we were all so gross. The Hotel here is very nice and we are very glad to have our own car now, so that when we get in the car we don't have to watch the taxi meter go up and up and up.
We did go out to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial yesterday and it was very sad. On our way there though we decided to stop for lunch. Just to preface, ever since I have known Rob, whenever he talks about Germany and German food he always talks about these Doener things. It was the first thing that he wanted when he got here and I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Well I fell asleep on the car ride there and woke up to Robert tapping at my window with a big grin on his face. I get out of the car and we are at this hole in the wall place. I will explain what a doener is later when I have pictures but it was really good and probably the best thing I have had to eat on the trip. anyways back to Dachau, I just couldn't believe what happened there. I mean I have heard stories and learned about it, but to be at the actual place where a lot of it happened was a very different feeling. Today we are leaving Munich and going over to see some castles today. We are really having a great time and have had some hilarious experiences.
The funniest has been attempting to find somewhat discreet places to nurse Drake. haha...ya right. I'm laughing inside just thinking about some of the places I've had to feed Drake so far on this trip- the Colloseum sitting on a old, fallen pillar where there were hadrly any people and then suddenly a tour group of about 30 people comes up around us and their tour guide starts talking about something right next to us. We were laughing our heads off! I've also fed him in a small bathroom on the train with my legs up against the wall because it was so small. Drake loves to pull the blanket off his head while he's eating so it's made for some funny experiences. He's been awesome though- Best. Baby. Ever.
Ok wow, this post has gotten really long. Sorry! I'm using it as a sort of journal to record the trip so sorry for the length and rambling! Until next time...
